Golconda is inspired by the Magritte pairing Golconda, 1953. The directional table light depicts a scene of almost identical men dressed in dark overcoats and bowler hats who appear as drops of rain against an urban landscape. Nichetto draws reference from the painting due to Golconda’s pure and sculptural shapes, formed through metal sheet turning. The spun aluminium shade is recognisable as the famous bowler hat, which features throughout Magritte’s works. It lies, apparently just balanced out of axis with its conical base. This intriguing positioning of the two forms enables the shade to rotate and omit light outside its own center of gravity.
